I have been fortunate to get the opportunity to work from home part time to be able to facilitate this journey of homeschooling. I have worked for the same company for 12 years as an Office Manager of a large accounting firm. I oversaw the operations and administrative team for the four DC area offices. It has been a great career, and company, I've really honestly really enjoyed what I've done. When we made the decision to cut back my hours and educate Bram at home I wasn't sure if it would even be possible to stay with them. In October I went to my boss and told her about our plan and exactly what I was looking for: 20-25 hours weekly, fully remote, and during non-standard hours; ideally 4:30am- 9:00am Monday-Friday, which seemed unattainable, but I really wanted to try to stay with this amazing company if possible. She was understanding and immediately said she would see what she could do. Lee and I were fully committed to beginning this journey so I know if they weren't able to that I would have started looking for alternative sources of income.
Several weeks later she called me back and to my surprise was able to find a position for me that seemed perfect! Starting in two week I will be part of a firm wide Administrative Team that is responsible for standardized functions like drafting Engagement Letters, E-filing tax returns, and special projects like updating databases, etc. All things that don't necessarily need to be done during business and all things I have experience in for years before I became the Office Manager. They have always said "family first" but I was still amazed at their compassion and understanding. Their salary offer was more than I could have expected and I am grateful for their trust and understanding during this process.
As it is a tax deadline driven position I will need to work more hours during the weeks leading up to major deadlines like March 15th and April 15th, but in general I'm thinking this will be our house's flow during the week if its a day we will stay home... but honestly most days we will be "on an adventure" so schedules get thrown out!:
4:00am Lee & I wake up; Lee leaves for work, I head to work in the dining room and log on by 4:30am! I will be able to step away as needed to make breakfast or deal with any issues but I hope to get a majority of the heavy thinking work completed before he wakes up.
What's also great about this is I can work from ANYWHERE! Which is ideal because since I'm part time I won't get benefits like paid time off. So this summer when we go on vacation or travel I am able to bring my laptop and get some work done before we start our adventures for the day. I'm usually up early anyway so the early morning hours I don't think will bother me.
After working in a high level supervisor role for 12 years it will be nice to relinquish that responsibility, emotional weight and "always on call" mentality. Typing documents, checking boxes and completing tasks within minutes will be be a nice change of pace! And best of all I get to spend more time with Bram and Lee while also facilitating Bram's thirst for knowledge and foster his love for learning.
I'm sure there will be an adjustment period and our plans may change as we evolve but I am excited about this opportunity.
